    JUSTIN KAUFLIN TRIO

Born in Maryland, USA, Justin Kauflin began music at age 4 with Su-zuki violin, adding piano a few years later. However, it was during this time he also endured numerous personal tri-als, particularly losing total vision from exudative retinopathy by age 11.  He adjusted by learning four types of Braille, cane mobility and, after a decade of classical violin and piano, switched to jazz piano.

In 2004, Justin graduated at the top of his class alongside his sighted peers at Salem High School, receiving a scholarship to attend William Paterson University. At WPU, he was taken under the wings of legendary trumpeter, Clark Terry and became a member of the Clark Terry Ensemble.  Graduating in 2008, Justin moved to New York City and, at age 23 pro-duced, composed and performed on his first CD, ‘Introducing Justin Kauflin’.

In NYC, he was hit with the realisation that "visionless independent mo-bility" is painstakingly slow at best and life-threatening at worst.  This led him to The Seeing Eye in Morristown, New Jersey where he trained 24/7 for a month with an amazing black labrador named Candy. In 2011, Justin relocated to Virginia Beach where he performed around the USA and at jazz festivals in Europe; won the VSA International Young Soloist Award; was voted ‘Jazz Artist of the Year’ in VEER Magazine; and was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. During this time, Justin's friendship with mentor Clark Terry was chron-icled by fellow musician, Al Hicks. Five years in the making, the resultant documentary, Keep On Keepin' On, won numerous awards and made the Oscar's short list.  Subsequently, Justin was signed by legendary producer and music icon, Quincy Jones for management, and was part of Quincy Jones' World Tours.

Hailed by Quincy Jones as a “simply beautiful cat,” 29-year-old Justin Kauflin is a brilliant jazz pianist whose critical acclaim continues to rise. Blessed with a singular melodic style, Kauflin’s impassioned performances make his a show that can’t be missed.
